How to look after our chickens

What do they eat?

Chickens need special pellets every morning. They also like soft vegetable and fruit peelings and enjoy fresh green grass to peck through to find treats such as seeds, insects, grubs and worms. A constant supply of fresh water must always be available. Chickens will sometimes dirty their water by washing their beaks in it. Water needs to be changed every day.

Where do they live?

Chickens love to run around and dig, dirt bath and look for food during the day but at night the best thing is to close them in the Eglu. This should protect them from foxes. They need a warm nesting box that stops any wind or rain getting to them. They will be quite happy to share their Eglu with others but need room to roost.

How do they make other friends?

Chickens will share their pen with others but some can get bossy. Girls will lay eggs every day when they are bigger but the eggs will not become chicks unless there is a cockerel in the pen.

How often do I take them to the vet?

Chickens should visit a vet every year to check they are healthy. Vets give them medicine to stop diseases and prevent them being bothered by parasites. They will also need to visit the vet if they look sick or are not behaving like they usually do.

How long do they live for?

About 4 or 5 years.

What do I need to give the chickens?

  • Someone to look after them for their whole life.
  • Friendship; to be with other poultry and people and not to be left alone for too long.
  • Healthy food - everyday.
  • Fresh, clean water - everyday.
  • Visits to the vet when they need it.
  • Lots of play time to explore and run around.
  • A run to keep them safe from foxes.
  • Nesting boxes that are clean.
